The North Cascades Chamber of Commerce PO Box 175 Marblemount, WA 98267-0175 The North Cascades Chamber of Commerce Invites You to "Loop the Loops"
The towns of Marblemount, Newhalem and Rockport, represented by the North Cascades Chamber of Commerce, are located on the portion of Washington State Route 20 shared by the International Loop and the Cascade Loop, the two major scenic mountain loop drives.
For visitors driving the Cascade Loop in Washington or the International Loop through British Columbia and Washington, these communities are the last commercial services for those going east over the mountains and the first services for those traveling west. Whether before or after you marvel at the rugged beauty of craggy peaks, snowy hanging glaciers, crashing waterfalls, incredible blue-green lakes and clear rushing streams, this area offers friendly services and opportunities to rest and enjoy recreational activities in a lovely natural setting. There are no malls or chain stores, but we do have groceries, gas, and local artisans with a selection of products. You will also find plenty of places to stay over and to savor a meal. Let your feet be your guide. There are paths to walk through old growth trees, mountains to hike or climb with trails of differing degrees of difficulty, or strap on your backpack and stay gone as long as you like. This is home to the North Cascades National Park, Rockport State Park, and several forest service and county parks. The Paysaytan Wilderness Area is to the east. To the west, Sauk Mountain near Rockport boasts a summer wildflower display you won't believe. Other local favorites include Cascade Pass Trail (8 miles round trip but worth it), or the breathtaking Ladder Creek Falls Trail (only a mile but with lots of steps), and the Trail of the Cedars,( a pleasant stroll) both in Newhalem. For specific information, check a hiking guide for the region or visit the Ranger Station Permit and Information Center in Marblemount. If you find your relaxation in fishing, this is the place to give it a try. The Skagit River has populations of steelhead, salmon and trout. Check with the locals for the current conditions. You can get a fishing license at the Rockport Store or the Skagit General Store. There are boat launch areas in both Marblemount and Rockport or you can fish in places right along the highway. The Skagit has a wild and scenic designation and is a popular river for birding, canoeing, kayaking and rafting. The run from Goodell Creek to Marblemount is very difficult, while from Marblemount to Rockport is fairly easy. A special winter activity is eagle watching. In the summer you might see an Osprey dive for a fish. If your hobby is photography, you can stay busy all year. Highway 20 is a frequent route for both bicycles and motorcycles. For an interesting day with lots of variety take the Skagit Hydroelectric Project Tour which includes a boat cruise, antique incline railway ride, a meal, guides and a dam tour. Should you be a history buff, we have lots. Come be your own detective and learn about our frontier past. Make the North Cascades your destination and pick a loop drive to take when you leave.
