Skagit River Resort
THE BULLERVILLE PROJECT
--
Scope & Vision

The Bullerville Project encompasses all aspects of development for a new destination resort situated in eastern Skagit County. Included are organization, planning, integration of current facilities into the future resort scheme, construction of new facilities, creation of visitor programs and activities, marketing and integral management services.

The destination resort would cater primarily to recreationalists, vacationers, business entities and government agencies which

  • are seeking a retreat from urban pressures, just for relaxation or a venue for an away-from-home meeting or work session
  • want to experience the natural beauty of the magnificent North Cascades mountain and wilderness areas
  • might be looking for an opportune environment for self-directed or group-participation life enhancement and education.

In that regard, the new destination resort will provide comfortable lodging and ancillary facilities in several price ranges, flexibly planned to meet the needs of individuals and groups using the resort as a base camp for area recreation as well as a location for productive work/learning sessions.

Opportunity Programs will be a big part of the resort experience. These will include both short-duration day & evening activities of interest to transient guests, and a calendar of longer programs lasting up to a week catering to guests desiring a more substantive undertaking.

The new facilities envisioned and the Opportunity Programs in development will be well-integrated into, or complementary to, the existing Skagit River Resort and are expected to exhibit that same unique, rustic charm of by-gone days in a mill town community in the beautiful North Cascades Mountains.

Opportunity Programs

Programs include both indoor and outdoor activities which may be enjoyed individually or in a group setting, for recreation or as part of a learning experience. An enduring interest in learning new things makes for a long and interesting life.

Guests inspired to utilize their time here to acquire new knowledge or skills will be enabled in these pursuits by the resort amenities (mini-libraries & information resources in selected fields, indoor & outdoor "classroom" locations, self-guided interpretive walks and some permanent educational displays) and a schedule of one- or multi-day sessions with qualified teachers/trainers drawn from our staff and regionally known experts.

Opportunity Programs are organized around three themes or topic areas-- Northwest Life, Recreation and Wellness. Here are some representative examples:

Northwest Life

This group of programs is comprised of hands-on classes and workshops designed to broaden knowledge about our environment & surroundings and to develop skills for fulfilling life activities. Staff and outside experts will lead and mentor a series of short one-day events and longer intensive sessions. (We envision an association with recognized entities such as Elderhostel, Inc. and the North Cascades Institute.)

  • Natural History of the North Cascades -- Geology, hydrology and climate are examined, as well as a look at the plant and animal life of the surrounding mountains and valleys, including birding
  • Northwest Washington Cultural History -- A look a native tribes, early European settlers, the mining era, the logging industry and other factors leading up to today, with reference to artifacts and personal stories of our forebears
  • Orienteering & Survival -- Classes in map-reading, using the compass, gear selection, outdoors safety, fire-building, finding food & shelter, climbing techniques and other backwoods lore
  • Cooking Techniques -- Drawing from the resources of the herb garden and northwest foods which might be in season, mornings at the North Cascades Mountain Lodge kitchen will be devoted to "Healthy Heart, Body and Soul" food preparation classes mentored by our professional staff
  • Organic Gardening -- Using the resort herb & vegetable gardens as classrooms, along with visits to local farms, classes will focus on plant selection, cultivation, mulching, composting and other techniques; Greenhouses for season-extension, permaculture and perennial food crops will also be covered
  • Freshwater Pond Culture & Management -- The fishing and ornamental ponds on the resort grounds provide hands-on opportunities for learning about aquatic systems and backyard fish production

Recreation

North Cascades Adventures and Wilderness Experiences, which specializes in regional outdoor-oriented vacation services, as well as other professional recreation firms, can provide accompanied eco-aware experiences. Or, guests can utilize the base-camp information resources (trail maps, trip reports, etc.) at the resort to choose and prepare for an un-guided foray into the surrounding fields, forests and mountains, at a pre-selected level of outdoor competence and difficulty.

  • trail hiking and interpretive walks
  • horseback treks and pack trips
  • wilderness camping
  • rock/glacier travel and technical climbing
  • kayaking and river rafting
  • cross-country skiing and snowshoeing
  • highway and off-road biking trips
  • river and stream fishing
  • wild berry and herb gathering trips
  • auto and bus touring adventures.

Wellness

The Wellness programs include bringing physical, mental, emotional and spiritual elements into harmony with a combination of non-competitive and competitive indoor and outdoor-oriented activities led by staff consisting of both medical and training personnel, including retired professional athletes. Guests participating in these programs will partake of special meals while at the resort, created to optimize their wellness goals.

One-day programs

  • fitness assessment and medical evaluation
  • personalized aerobic and strength training
  • stress-reducing workshops
  • relaxation training
  • personal nutritional counseling and goal setting

Longer-term offerings

  • monitored fasting and weight-loss
  • lifestyle counseling
  • medical management, including monitoring of conditions sensitive to the effects of diet and exercise, such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol.
