Goals & Progress

Short-term goals, which will be accessible to both resort guests and the public, include nature trails, benches & interpretive signs along such trails, an exercise & fitness course along one of the trails, restoration of lumber company sites with explanatory markers, a children’s play/swing/slide area, a demonstration herb garden, other decorative & native plantings for horticultural learning programs, and an extensive schedule of educational programs (wilderness recreation skills, life-skills training, wellness, etc).

As you can imagine, taken altogether they represent a sizable financial commitment, and we invite you to participate in any way you can.

As of June 2003, we have been "pioneering" trail corridors in the forest areas north and west of the present resort buildings.  Following pre-existing and overgrown logging skid roads from years ago, we anticipate that we can construct a delightful trail system with some light clearing of underbrush, minimal leveling, and attention to the surface in a few muddy areas.

The ground layout of these trails can be envisioned as a large free-form "" or double-loop figure.

The first loop is being developed as an outdoor fitness course, with exercise stations spotted along the way in clearings to the side of the path. Signs (or take-along handouts) illustrating the use of the equipment (such as sit-up benches, pull-up bars, balance beams, etc) will explain each exercise for child and adult use. At the end of the fitness loop, users may return to the starting point or continue onto the second loop.

The second loop is conceived of as an interpretive loop, highlighting the natural and social history of the area.  As such it will include signing/handouts explaining the plant and animal life to been seen.  The latter part of this loop passes through the Buller Brothers Lumber Company site and by the old mill pond (presently being renovated so it once again is an attractive visual feature and water habitat), so interpretive aids here will explain the artifacts remaining from these bygone days.

The tread of both loops is to be upgraded so that they may be used by walkers and joggers pretty much year-round.  Motorized vehicles (except for those necessary for occasional maintenance) will be excluded from this peaceful natural area in the forest behind the resort.
